Tattoos? Good or bad for your job search?

Posted on July 25, 2010

Question: Which is more important in the long run, getting tattoos, or a good job?

The odds of you landing a NBA pro basketball job are slim. If you are the best in the world at something, you can probably sport as many tattoos as you want. But I’ll bet at 17, your not the best, yet.

I ran across an article in the paper that might help you make a decision about whether to get a tattoo. Check it out.

I shop at Sam’s Club 2 or 3 times a week. Many of their younger employees have lots of visible tattoos. Obviously Sam’s Club doesn’t care.

If your goal is to work at Sam’s Club for the rest of your life, get some tattoos and apply there. If your goals are higher, wait.

“At 17, 19 or 20, you don’t know what your future holds,” Mielock said. “I am not against tattoos or self-expression, but other people are going to form perceptions of you based on these things. I recommend if you’re going to get a tattoo, get it where you can cover it up.”

Happy job hunting!

  1. It is still early in the healing process, its been like 4 days since I got it. The dent is really tiny and it still has color, but its just not level with my skin and I was just wondering if its just healing weird or if it will be fixable when I go in for touch ups??? Please help me, its really bugging me… Thanks!

  2. I personnaly had to hire a chemist in a former job where we were manufacturing and distributing sanitary products. I had done a phone interview with the candidate and schedule an appointment to meet him. He was the perfect candidate (on the phone) for the job.

The job market is still tough and might always be. Minimum wages are higher than they have ever been and employers want to be sure they are hiring well.

  4. Tattoos can give a wrong impression, not so much to me, but to others so it would be a good idea to cover up your tattoos during a job interview.

  5. I have a nephew that is graduating from college. He received a Texas Class A Misdemeanor for fighting when he was 17 yrs. old in high school. How will this affect his chances in his job search?
