Teen Resumes’ Not Needed!

Posted on August 27, 2009

This topic is bound to stir up some conversation, if not with young people, with adults or some high school teachers.

Many teens and young people get hung up on having a resume’. They spend weeks in school and career classes learning how to write a good resume’.

Well, I am here to tell you that you don’t need a resume’ if you are between 15 and 20 years old. In fact a bad resume’ can hurt your chances of getting a job.

I think it’s more important to spend that time and energy personally finding the job you want in other creative ways.

Many teens between 15 and 20 have never had a “pay check” job and don’t have much experience with other jobs.

Many job applications have areas where you list previous employment. Most potential part-time employers don’t have the time to study your resume’, they will look at you and scan your job application and then file it along with hundreds of others.

Potential employers really want to see their application filled out legibly, fully and honestly. If those things are right, your availability is the other big factor. If your availability is just the same as everyone else’s, you won’t stand out as much, and you won’t be as valuable.

My advice, what attracts my attention, what works, is a sincere letter, that tells a potential employer why you want to work for that person or business.

So, bottom line, don’t worry about a resume if you are a teen.

I put together a well-designed resume when I was a junior in college.

Concentrate on other things that will advance your chances of getting the part-time job you want, a resume’ will be necessary later after you have the job experiences to put on one.

This is a really good point, Lee! A lot of young people think they need a resume just like everyone else. But they have nothing to put on the resume. How is your “resume” supposed to stand out from the rest? Make it a personalized letter to the employer!
