#1 Way To Loose Your Job!

Posted on December 14, 2009

If you are lucky enough to have a part-time job as a teen or young adult, try to hold on to it, they are scarce. Its 13 degrees below zero outside Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop right now and we have had 5 people looking for jobs and its only noon!

The unemployment  numbers are already dismal. Not a good use of time to be looking for jobs at ice cream shops when you outnumber the customers. Think seasonal!

I bring this up a lot in my articles to illustrate not only how hard it is to find a job in these though times, but how easy it can be to loose your job. The Job Guy website is designed to help young adults get the job they want, but keeping the job is really up to you.

So, you’ve had your job a while, you know how to do it well, your actually kind of bored with it so you let down your guard.

You aren’t doing the best job you can, you’re a little late for each shift, your just plain not motivated at your job. Then one day the boss or manager calls you to ask where you are?

You go,

I didn’t think I was working today.

And the manager says, your right, your not working today, or any other day! And that’s it, your gone without another peep.

Wow, how can it be that easy to loose your job!

There are many work environments that can’t take the time to call you and ask where you are, they will just take you off the schedule and move on to some one else.

If it was truly a mistake on your part and you can prove it, you might be able to save you’re your job. But employers have heard every excuse in the book, if you can invent a new one they may just keep you on for your creativity but don’t count on it.

Employers aren’t tolerant of a no show employee and many have a “one strike your out” policy. What they need is for all scheduled employees to shop on time, every time.

If you don’t show up or miss a shift, it puts extra strain on the employees that did show up, but most of all it shows your lack of respect for your job, the other employees and the person who hired you.

It also doesn’t look good to be let go from a job on a resume’ should you decide to have one.  If you do have a resume’ I would advise leaving off negative information if you can.

The bottom line is always show up for every shift, don’t be late and you will up your odds of not being the #1 reason for losing your job.

Happy job hunting or keeping the job you have.

  1. Hey Lee! Being punctual is an easy way to show your appreciation for a job. I thought everyone was punctual. Then I came to college. It’s amazing how many people show up late for class. And those people don’t want to be there.

By the way, nice use of the blockquote.
